Biography

Morissette took to music at an early age and, in 1991, she released her debut album, eAlanis’ (1991). It sold 100 000 copies and earned her a Juno Award in 1992, for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year. Her second album, eNow Is The Time’ (1992), a ballad driven album that was slightly less successful than its predecessor. She left MCA soon after, and relocated to Toronto. In 1994, Morissette moved to Los Angeles, where she met songwriter-producer Glen Ballard. Ballard and Morissette were determined to pursue an edgier, more ealternative’ approach. This resulted in eJagged Little Pill’ (1995), released on Madonna’s Maverick Records.

The album was a massive success, selling more than 15 million copies in the US alone (10 million in UK and Europe). It won four Grammys for Album of the Year, Best Rock Song and Best Female Vocal Performance for eYou Oughta Know’ and Best Rock Album. She then embarked on an 18 month world tour that culminated in eJagged Little Pill, Live’ (1997), which won the 1998 Grammy for Best Long Form Music Video.

In 1998, Morissette was a guest vocalist on Ringo Starr’s album eVertical Man’), and on The Dave Matthews Band’s eBefore These Crowded Streets’. She also recorded the immensely popular song eUninvited’ for the eCity of Angels’ soundtrack. Later that year, her follow-up album eSupposed Former Infatuation Junkie’ was released _ to critical acclaim. In 1999, the new transcendent Morissette played God in Kevin Smith’s eDogma’. The film, , saw Morissette play a non-speaking, slightly playful and very zen personification of a loving God. In 2002, Morissette released her fifth studio album, ‘Under Rug Swept’ (2002), which featured the hit ‘Hands Clean’ and eSo Unsexy’, found the singer-songwriter taking the production reins and delivering arguably her most accomplished album. 2004, eSo-Called Chaos’ was released, her sixth studio album. In 2005, Morissette released an acoustic version of eJagged Little Pill’ to commemorate the album’s tenth anniversary. In the autumn of 2005, she opened for The Rolling Stones on tour, and also released a greatest hits album, eAlanis Morissette: The Collection’ (2005). She contributed the song eWunderkind’ to the soundtrack of the film eThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ (2005).
