Morris Day & The Time Biography

Morris Day & The Time

Biography 🎤

Morris Day & The Time came strutting onto the scene in the early 1980s with the kind of swagger that could only come from Prince’s musical galaxy. Assembled by the Purple One himself, The Time served as both protégés and rivals in Prince’s elaborate sonic universe. Fronted by the ever-charismatic Morris Day — a man who brought mirror-checking mid-song into vogue — the band was born to funk, flirt, and flaunt their way into the spotlight.

The original lineup featured Morris Day (vocals), Jimmy Jam (keyboards), Terry Lewis (bass), Jesse Johnson (guitar), Jellybean Johnson (drums), and Jerome Benton (the ultimate hype man). Their self-titled debut album dropped in 1981 and immediately announced a new Minneapolis Sound was in town — slick, funky, and undeniably fresh.

Musical Style 🕺

Imagine James Brown’s funk had a baby with new wave synths, and that baby grew up strutting around in a zoot suit with a mirror in one hand and a swagger in the other — that’s The Time. Their music is an electrifying cocktail of tight grooves, cheeky lyrics, dancefloor-ready basslines, and polished production. Songs like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" are not just tracks; they’re sonic party invitations with a strict dress code of attitude.

Morris Day’s charismatic vocals and performative flair made every live performance feel like a theatrical funk revue. Combine that with Prince’s invisible but unmistakable production touch, and you’ve got a sound that refuses to age.

Legacy 🔥

Though often seen in the shadow of Prince, Morris Day & The Time have more than earned their own spotlight. Their influence can be seen in modern funk, R&B, and even hip-hop — with artists like Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak channeling that same flamboyant fun and rhythmic tightness.

They also left an indelible mark on pop culture with their appearances in films like Purple Rain (1984), where Morris Day’s persona — equal parts villain and charm machine — was cemented into music history.

Despite lineup changes and industry hurdles, The Time has endured. Whether reuniting under The Original 7ven or performing as Morris Day & The Time, their shows continue to deliver contagious energy and funk precision.

Notable Tracks 🎵

  • "Jungle Love"
  • "The Bird"
  • "Cool"
  • "777-9311"
  • "Gigolos Get Lonely Too"

Where to Listen 📀

Fun Fact 😎

Jerome Benton — Day’s sidekick — would hold up a mirror for Morris to admire himself mid-performance. It wasn’t vanity; it was stagecraft. 💅

They weren’t just a band — they were a vibe, a groove, and a moment in music history that still makes us want to scream “O-e-o-e-o!” every time "Jungle Love" hits the speakers.

With his dynamic dancing and smooth yet gutsy, vocals, Morris Day played an essential role in the development of the Twin City dance/club sound of the 1980s. A founding member of Prince's band, the Time, in 1981, he remained with the group until 1984 when he launched his solo career. Returning for the first time in 1988, he performed and recorded with the Time from 1990 until 1991 and since 1995. Day's involvement with Prince traces back to 1980 when his composition 'Partyup,' originally recorded when he was a member of the Enterprise, was covered on Prince's Dirty Mind album. Releasing his debut solo album, Color of Success, in 1985, Day reached his apex with his second solo album, Daydreaming, two years later. Produced by ex-Time members Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, the album included the chart-topping R&B tune 'Fishnet.'

Day released his third solo album, Guaranteed, in 1992. After Guaranteed, Day toured on-again, off-again without any new product. He finally returned to record store racks in 2004 with It's About Time a mostly live album with a few new studio cuts, one including a guest appearance by rapper E-40. Day has appeared in such films as Prince's autobio-pic, Purple Rain, in 1984, and New Attitude in 1990
